Stay Cool With a Roof Ventilation System

The Gold Coast and all of the SE Queensland district experiences warm to hot weather for most of the year. Air conditioners and fans really help, but power bills rise the moment that air conditioner is turned on. In some cases, having an air conditioner is not even a viable option. An example of this would be a factory or warehouse. Industrial fans will play their part, but having roof ventilation will really help to cool things down considerably.

Heat rises, so any heat generated within the premises or coming through the roof will be trapped there. This heat builds and builds until the entire building is sweltering. Roof ventilation allows that heat to escape out into the atmosphere, preventing this oppressive temperature build up. A stream of fresh airflow is also created when roof ventilation is in place, reducing the humidity and the heat, as well as purging stale air.

Because of the warm climate we experience in the region, energy costs can be a concern as we regularly run air conditioners to keep our homes, offices and commercial premises cool. With roof ventilation allowing that hot air a way to escape, air conditioners run more efficiently and won’t put as much of a strain on the power and electricity costs. In fact, more often you will find you won’t even need to run the air conditioner and a fan will suffice.

How Does It Work?

Often nicknamed “whirlybirds”, roof ventilators are installed on rooftops and powered by the wind. The wind or breeze spins the ventilator fan blades, which are designed on precise angles to draw hot air up through the roof and out into the atmosphere.

Not only do they reduce the amount of heat trapped within a building, roof ventilators are great for extracting steam and moisture build up in bathrooms and other areas of the home. Even in winter they expel cold, damp air that can often lead to dew in the ceiling. That dew can cause water damage as well as leading to mould growth, but a roof ventilation system will go a long way towards preventing this.
