Leaking Roofs Can Cause Major Problems

A leaking roof can be a major inconvenience in wet weather, having to position buckets below the drips. But really, that’s the least of your concerns. If your old or damaged roof is leaking every time it rains, that water is steadily causing serious cosmetic and structural damage to your home.

For starters, water is going to produce unsightly staining to your ceilings. Most ceilings are painted white, so even the smallest stain is going to stand out. The majority of ceilings are made of plasterboard, and this material doesn’t respond kindly to being rained on. The cardboard covering the plasterboard will perish and the plaster will then start to crumble. Instead of a few ceiling stains or a drip you have to catch in a bucket, you could potentially end up with holes in your ceiling, or your ceiling caving in on you.

Water in the ceiling will also rot away the timber trusses and framework. It can even seep down inside the external and internal walls. This can have catastrophic affects on the structural integrity of the entire house.

Furthermore, this constant build up of moisture will lead to the growth of mould. Not only is mould extremely ugly, it is also a major health hazard. Once infested, it is a real process to try and rid the home of mould and it takes a team of experts to do it. The procedure is necessary and will prove very costly.

Perhaps the most dangerous aspect of all when it comes to a leaking roof is the potential for that water to come into contact with your home’s electrical circuitry. At the very least this will lead to your power tripping out. It could also lead to damage to your appliances. Worst case scenario could be electrocution or a house fire.

A leaking roof is not something to take lightly or put off. Maybe it just requires some roof repairs, but you really need to get a roofing expert in for a thorough inspection – both on top of the roof and inside the roof cavity.
